Gifts to the Upshur County Public Library open up opportunities for all who use the library.  These can include opportunities for learning for students, recreational reading and programs for retirees, job search information for the unemployed, and pre-literacy story hours for young children.  There are many opportunities to donate to the Library, both monetarily and through donations of materials.  All gifts are accepted in accordance with the Library’s Gift and Donation Policy.

MONETARY DONATIONS

Many individuals and families who place a high value on the Library’s programs and services donate money to us. They understand that the Library supports literacy and education, provides access to information, supports the democratic process and enhances the quality of life in our community. Please consider making a donation of any amount (checks should be made payable to the Upshur County Public Library). You may donate directly to the Library in several ways:

 

All contributions to the Friends or to the Library are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

RESTRICTED GIFTS


As long as they are consistent with the mission of the Library, gifts can be designated for funding programs of special interest to the donor.

Another way of supporting your library is by donating money to be used to purchase specific materials of interest to the donor. Please contact the Director to find out the cost of materials purchased in this manner, as there may be special discounts the Library qualifies for.

 

MEMORIAL/HONORARY GIFTS


Supporting your Library through a memorial or in honor of a loved one is a generous way to show how much these special people meant to you. Lots of people donate to the Library as a way of expressing their appreciation of special friendships or relationships. Any donation to the Library can become a memorial/honorary gift by notifying us who you would like to memorialize or honor. Bookplates can be placed in books to mark an occasion or memorialize/honor people. Letters of acknowledgment and appreciation will be sent to both the donor and family of the person who is being honored.

 

BUSINESS CONTRIBUTIONS/SPONSORSHIP

 

Many individuals wish to memorialize a loved one in some way, or if you are local business that recognizes that a strong, vibrant library is one thread that holds together the fabric of our community. They value a strong, vibrant library and donate generously. We suggest that you consider playing a role in sustaining the library as a community resource through sponsoring an event or service the library provides.

The Library looks for ways to involve individual and business sponsors in events/programs through sponsorship and in-kind support.  For example, sponsors can sustain the cost of a service the library provides for a year (for example, the wi-fi hotspot service contracts or the Zoom account which is available for groups using the meeting room).  If you are interested in sponsoring an event, we can acknowledge you in event signage and promotion. Some examples of event sponsorship include our Summer Reading Program events, our annual Ramp Dinner, and the Run For It event in the fall.

MATCHING GIFTS

Many employers match their employees’ gifts to non-profit institutions. Some companies will match the gifts of employee spouses and retirees as well. This is a simple way of doubling the value of your donation. To find out if your company has a matching gift program contact your Human Resources Department.

LEGACY GIFTS

ENDOWMENT GIFTS


Establishing a permanent endowment fund in your name or the name of a loved one ensures the Library’s future and keeps alive the memory of the honoree.

 

PLANNED GIFTS

 

Planned gifts can support the Library’s programs for years and generations to come. Legacies come in all sizes and structures and can bestow significant tax benefits to the donor. Examples of planned gifts are:

  • Bequests through wills or trust
  • Charitable gift annuity
  • Charitable remainder trust
  • Retirement plan assets
  • Life insurance donation.

If you are interested in helping the Library using any of these financial instruments please have your attorney or estate planner contact the Library.

MATERIAL DONATIONS

The Library accepts donations of gently used books, CD audiobooks, DVDs and other media. Some items are added to the Library collection while others are sold by the Friends of the Library. Either way, your donations benefit the Library and the community.
We do not accept textbooks, encyclopedia sets older than two years, or items that are moldy, musty or in disrepair. A receipt for tax purposes is available upon request; however, it is the responsibility of the donor to provide evidence of the tax value of their donation.
